A Best Practice Learning Environment is intended for qualified doctors and allied health professionals with an upper-intermediate to advanced level of English who are looking to work in an English-speaking environment. Mirroring the increased emphasis on communication-skills training in medicine; or nursing; dentist; or other health professions, this course aims to develop the language and interpersonal skills essential to the establishment and maintenance of rapport between health profession and their patients.

At the same time the course focuses on the 4 key components of the English language - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The course is aligned to OET and the skills for the 4 key sub tests (LRWS).

Our aim is to develop the grammatical and lexical features of English, employing an approach that encourages you to discover the language and its properties for yourself. The activities interspersed throughout each unit and sub tests, highlight useful expressions using medical journal articles, patients notes, health professional dialogues all of which aid in essential concepts of communication.

Our objective is for you to achieve -

  • Language skills essential for clinical context, for example: initiating social conversations; switching between medical terminology and everyday language; and requesting personal information from patients or carers, including requests for clarification.
  • Workplace communication, some examples: handover notes; safety briefings and staff briefings which provide information about patient's care.
  • Active listening skills, for example: correlating research studies and understanding the speakers point of view and adapting those skills into your clinical practices.
